The number of healthcare professionals who are trained to provide prescriptions is increasing. This includes some pharmacists who have completed additional training. We call this “Independent Prescribing”. From September 2026, all newly-qualified pharmacists will be independent prescribers. This means people will have local access to more services and treatment from their community pharmacist.
To get ready for this change, and work out the best way to make use of pharmacists’ growing skills, the NHS has asked over 200 pharmacies in England to take part in a programme offering different services. We are pleased work collaboratively with Community Pharmacist Independent Prescribers in our neighbouring pharmacy Badham Pharmacy, Parton Road.
We will be referring appropriate patients who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure to the prescribing pharmacist at Badhams if we feel that a change in treatment might be needed to control the condition.
This will be happening until October 2026 when the national ‘pathfinder’ project ends.
Of course, if you would prefer to have a call with our own surgery pharmacist instead, this can be booked through reception, however we encourage you to try this new scheme so we can give NHS England as much data as we can.
